Your comment about how evangelicalism is obsessed with the "mechanics of individual salvation" really hits home for me. I spent much of the past fifteen years in evangelical churches, where the overwhelming emphasis was on acquiring sufficient theological knowledge (i.e. substitutionary atonement) in order to be "saved." To their credit, these churches did not ignore the need for social justice work, but this was definitely not the emphasis. I've lately been reading the Gospel narratives of Jesus' ministry with new eyes, and what strikes me is his emphasis on right action rather than right belief. In other words, what we do, and how we treat the marginalized, is the primary focus, rather than subscribing to the correct theological doctrines. Shusaki Endo's "A Life of Jesus," which I read recently, has been really helpful in my evolving understanding of my faith. I put a review up recently on my Substack.
